All members of the “Large-Scale Tropical Dynamics Group” acknowledge the importance of diverse views that arise from the participation of people from all races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religions and cultures. Equal and inclusive participation, and the development of a community that reflects these beliefs, is essential to the advancement of the scientific enterprise.
Nonetheless, we recognize that many individuals face discrimination on a daily basis and are not treated as equal members of society. Political and economic structures still exist that exploit underrepresented communities, hindering their ability to participate in science. As a result, the scientific community does not reflect the diversity of humanity.
As members of the “Large-Scale Dynamics and General Circulation Group” we pledge to
(1) Engage in practices that are anti-discriminatory and anti-racist, read literature about social justice, reach out to underserved communities and learn from diverse viewpoints.
(2) Participate in activities that foster the development of an inclusive community.
(3) Always question whether information presented to you is biased, racist, anti-semitic or deliberately offensive to specific groups.
(4) Recognize the importance of an inclusive language when speaking and writing.
