What causes the development of rainfall?

Have you ever looked at a thunderstorm and wonder what caused it to develop in that particular region in the first place? This question may sound simple on the surface, but it remains a major challenge for both forecast and climate models. In particular, the processes that lead to the onset of deep cumulus convection in the tropics are not well understood.

Our research seeks to understand the statistics of tropical convection and obtain insights onto their mechanisms in a simplified setting. We use variables such as buoyancy, moisture as well as the large-scale flow in order to understand that drives the evolution of rainfall.
